Just a short trip away from bustling Lisbon is the magical Sintra. The town is nestled amid cool green mountains like something from a fairytale, and is an absolute must-visit.
We start at Pena Park (ticket included), where you can wander through a variety of plant life. Feel the royal treatment as you enter Pena National Palace, a marvellous 19th century estate (ticket included), and look down at the mountain at panoramic views of Lisbon.
You will also be given free time to explore Sintra. Do not miss the chance to try the local pastries: Travesseiro (puff pastry filled with an almond custard) and Queijada (made using requeijão cheese, eggs, milk, and sugar). You could visit the National Palace, also called Town Palace (ticket not included), or explore the town’s winding streets.
As we leave Sintra, we drive through the natural wonders of Sintra Natural Park before stopping for photos at the Roca Cape cliffs, the westernmost point of Continental Europe. Catch a view of the strong waves at the breathtaking Guincho beach, a haven for surfers.
A further scenic drive along the Atlantic coast brings us to Cascais, Portugal’s first tourist region. You will have free time for lunch, a walk along the bay or soak up sun at the beach. On the return drive to Lisbon, we pass the coastal town of Estoril, which has one of the biggest working casinos in Europe.
