Plan a Family Camino

One of our favourite Camino de Santiago trips to organise is a family Camino. There are so many types of families and combinations of family members who walk the Camino together. Whether it is parents walking with their children, a solo parent with their kids, cousins, siblings, father-son bonding, or grandparents taking their grown-up children – the Camino is for all types of families!

A walk on the Camino de Santiago offers a unique family bonding experience. You get to spend as many days as you like walking, exploring, and spending time with each other.

For parents, this offers an excellent opportunity to connect with your children. For children, it is an adventure where they can learn about the world and see their parents in a new way. Siblings can grow apart as they get older, and the Camino can bring you back together. Cousins can share a holiday with a difference on this pilgrimage through Spain, with plenty of excellent stories to tell.

We are also seeing an increase in “skip-gen” family holidays on the Camino. Skip-gen or skipped generation travel means grandparents taking their grandchildren on holiday (or the other way around!). These trips are a wonderful experience for the whole family. Grandparents can spend more time with their grandkids, and parents get some time off.

No matter what size or shape your family is there are options on the Camino de Santiago for you. Additionally, we have shorter walking days options for younger kids, older people, and people with mobility challenges. We can arrange bicycles too if you’d like to change up your active family holiday!

Organise a unique family reunion on the Camino. It will be a family holiday you will never forget!

The Camino Frances is a pilgrimage from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France over the Pyrenees and across the north of Spain to Santiago de Compostela and the tomb of St James. Passing through famous Spanish towns and cities such as Pamplona, Burgos, Leon and Ponferrada, you have plenty of opportunity to enjoy the unique culture of this region. The walk will have you traversing varying landscapes from the mountainous Pyrenees, to the flat plateau of Northern Spain to the undulating hilly landscape of Galicia. To complete the full French Way you do need to have a reasonable level of fitness and also more than a month free to give you the time to walk and incorporate a few rest days along the way.

This route is the starting point of the Camino Frances. It begins in France at the town of St-Jean-Pied-de-Port and finishes in Pamplona, the town famous for its ‘Running of the Bulls’ festival in San Fermin each July, described by Ernest Hemingway in his novel The Sun Also Rises. At first, it follows the Route de Napoleon over the Roncesvalles Pass (at an elevation of 1,500m) into the Basque country, and then crosses into more gentle terrain in the great region of Navarra.

Starting in the mountain-hugging town of Ponferrada and finishing in Santiago de Compostela, this section crosses both the Castilla y Leon and Galicia regions. Leaving the mediaeval city of Ponferrada, this Camino crosses the magnificent O’Cebreiro Mountains before heading towards the heart of Galicia and its lush green hills. This section can be physically demanding and requires a good level of fitness, but it is also a highly rewarding leg of the Camino, offering beautiful landscapes and numerous cultural sights.
